First Aid and CPR Instructor Courses
First Aid & CPR Instructors support the Red Cross First Aid Program through the delivery of our First Aid & CPR Instructor Training in Hamilton and Ontario. Candidates enter our comprehensive Instructor Development Program, designed to prepare them to support dynamic, learner-centred classroom environments.
First Aid & CPR Instructor Development Pathway
Below is the pathway to become a certified First Aid & CPR Instructor. You must successfully complete each step before advancing to the next step. Certification is valid for three years.
1. Evaluate skills and check prerequisites
Confirm prerequisites are met: you must be 18 years or older, have a valid participant certificate for the program you wish to teach, and successfully complete a skills evaluation.
2. Fundamentals of instruction
Complete the Fundamentals of Instruction online component (8 hrs*), and a classroom component (14 hrs 30 min) focused on the application of fundamentals.
3. Discipline-specific classroom component
Attend the discipline-specific classroom component (14 hrs 30 min), which focuses on the specific skills of that program.
4. Teaching experience
Complete the Teaching Experience online module (30-45 min*) and a classroom component with the support of a Teaching Experience Supervisor.
5. Certification
The final step is the certification. Congratulations! You are now officially a certified Instructor.* Online learning time will vary depending on the learner.
First Aid Instructor Training in Hamilton and Ontario can be done at our location or yours if you have a minimum of 4 participants.
Professional Responder Leadership Courses
Designed for First Responders and Emergency Medical Responders, Instructor candidates with a focus on instructional techniques required to deliver the Canadian Red Cross’ professional responder courses such as Emergency Medical Responder, First Responder, and Advanced First Aid; these include delivering scenarios, teaching in varied environments, and organizing specialized courses. The course content accommodates a variety of Instructor candidates which encourages a rich learning environment built on instructional skills. It also allows Instructors to be able to teach other First Aid programs with minimal course work.
Duration: 8 hours
Prerequisites
Proof of appropriate participant-level certification (either Emergency Medical Responder or Advanced First Aid); completion of Red Cross First Aid Instructor course, completed skills competency checklist for participant level, pre-course assignment, 19 years of age

Completion
100% attendance, skills demonstration, and 80% min. passing grade on written exam
Certification
3-year certification as Advanced Emergency Care Instructor
Recertification: 7 hours
Post-course Requirements
Meets the requirement of the co-teach form as outlined by the Instructor Trainer at the appropriate certification

Wilderness and Advanced Wilderness Instructor Courses
Designed for Advanced Wilderness & Remote First Aid Instructor candidates with a focus on instructional techniques required to deliver the Canadian Red Cross’ specialized courses such as Advanced Wilderness & Remote First Aid; these include delivering scenarios, teaching in varied environments, and organizing specialized courses. The course content accommodates a variety of Instructor candidates which encourages a rich learning environment built on instructional skills. It also allows Instructors to be able to teach other First Aid programs with minimal course work.
